Alistair McKie BSc (Hons) Ost.
Alistair has been a qualified osteopath for over ten years. He also has over twenty years' experience in mental health nursing. Having recently moved to Arran with his young family he hopes to bring his passion, skill and knowledge in applying the benefits of osteopathy to islanders and visitors alike. Alistair works with both structural and cranial osteopathic technique.
Structural osteopathy works with the structure and function of the body on the principle that the health of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. Osteopaths use physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension and to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues.
Cranial osteopathy is a subtle approach (used throughout the body not just in the head) to identify changes of tension and tissue quality in the whole body. Changes that may have arisen from recent dysfunction, historical injury or even birth trauma can be addressed. Osteopaths use gentle touch to engage with and help restore the natural rhythm of body tissues.
All osteopathic treatment aims to activate the innate self-healing ability of the body. A thorough case history and examination will guide the osteopath to a diagnosis and a suitable negotiated treatment plan or appropriate referral.
